Firewall Settings for the Peer Name Resolution Protocol

The Peer Name Resolution Protocol requires the following firewall exceptions:

  1. UDP 3540 (Peer Name Resolution-Protocol (PNRP))
  2. UDP 1900 (Simple Service Discovery-Protocol (SSDP))

For Internet synchronization you will additionally need the Tunnel protocol Teredo. This will have to be allowed by the firewall, unless your network natively supports IPv6.

How to configure the Windows® Firewall manually for the use of the Peer Name Resolution-Protocol

Windows XP

  1. Open the Control Panel over “Start > Control Panel“
  2. Click on “Network and Internet Connectivity“
  3. Click on “Change Windows Firewall settings“
  4. Activate the Windows Firewall
  5. Make sure that the check box “Don`t allow exceptions“ is not checked

  6. Activate the check box “Peer Name Resolution-Protocol (PNRP)“ and “UPnP-Framework“ under “Exceptions“

If the entry “Peer Name Resolution-Protocol (PNRP)“ is not available, then click on “Port…“ and enter the following data:

  7. Click “OK“ to confirm changes

Windows Vista

SimpleSYN registers the firewall rules necessary for the Peer Name Resolution-Protocol in the Windows Firewall during installation, and activates them in private network profiles. The altered firewall rules are not automatically activated in any of the other network profiles for security reasons.

    Third Party Desktop Firewalls

If you use a personal Firewall form a Third Party manufacturer, then please check the following points:

    1. Under Windows® Vista and Windows® 7 the installed personal firewall software must support the Internet protocol Version 6 (IPv6) correctly. Otherwise Windows will deactivate the use of the Tunnel protocol Teredo and the Internet synchronization might not be possible. Please make sure that your firewall software does indeed support Teredo. For further information contact the firewall software manufacturer.
    2. Make sure that the service “PNRPSvc“ (Peer Name Resolution-Protocol) with the "UDP Port 3540" is allowed by the firewall
    3. Make sure that the service “SSDPSrv“ (Simple Service Discovery-Protocol) with "UDP Port 1900" is allowed by the firewall
