Internet synchronization

Synchronization via the Internet is only available in the SimpleSYN business version.

The SimpleSYN business version allows synchronization of your Outlook® data from any location worldwide over the Internet.

For Internet synchronization to function the SimpleSYN-server has to be accessible via the Internet. This means it has to be run on the server computer.

In a domain environment the name resolution through the Peer Name Resolution Protocol might not work. More information about SimpleSYN in the active directory can be found here.

To activate synchronization via the Internet select the checkbox “Synchronize via the Internet”.

These settings have to be identical on the SimpleSYN-server and all SimpleSYN-clients.

It is impossible to enter the SimpleSYN server name on the client side if Internet synchronization is aimed for. It is necessary to either have an invitation file including the secure SimpleSYN server name or a unique Server-ID allowing access to the name. In the local network this step is unnecessary as the SimpleSYN-client can directly find the SimpleSYN-server. Here it is possible to select the server in the drop-down menu.

SimpleSYN needs advanced firewall settings for internet synchronization. A prompt to adjust the firewall settings will appear if necessary. More information about firewall settings for SimpleSYN can be found here.

Activation of Internet synchronization leads to making the SimpleSYN-server accessible via the Internet. Enter a secure password to avoid unauthorized access to your SimpleSYN-server. More information about the security of SimpleSYN can be found here.

Internet synchronization is only available if the Peer Name Resolution Protocol can be used and the checkbox “Use PRNP” has been activated.

Server settings

If a connection of the SimpleSYN-clients to the SimpleSYN-server outside of the local network is desired click on “Publish server for Internet synchronization”. The following dialog allows to either publish the SimpleSYN-server with a unique Server-ID or to save an invitation file that can be send to the SimpleSYN-clients via e-mail.

Publication of the SimpleSYN-server for Internet synchronization

The SimpleSYN-server can be published on the creativbox.net-server to allow for easy connection establishment of further clients. To this end creativbox.net operates a web service that saves the server names as well as the respective public keys of the SimpleSYN-server together with a unique server-ID. Via this server-ID a SimpleSYN-client is able to access the SimpleSYN server information and subsequently establish a direct connection with the SimpleSYN-server.

The following data will be saved on the creativbox.net-server:

  1. SimpleSYN server name
  2. Unique, randomly generated server-ID
  3. Comment (maximum 39 characters)
  4. Public key of the SimpleSYN-server. The public key is identical to the Peer-Name-Authority. This public key allows the SimpleSYN-client to verify the registered Peer-Name of the SimpleSYN-server, so as to ensure communication with the right SimpleSYN-server
  5. Automatically generated unique service-ID

The saved data do not allow any conclusion about your identity. No Outlook®-data will be transmitted through the servers of creativbox.net or cached on them.

Utilization of the creativbox.net server for publication of the SimpleSYN-server is optional; alternatively it is possible to save an invitation file which can be send to the SimpleSYN-clients via e-mail. More information about saving the information file can be found here.

Click on “Publish Service” to retrieve a unique server ID. Communicate the server ID along with the server password to your SimpleSYN clients for example by E-Mail or phone. With this data the SimpleSYN client can connect to the SimpleSYN server over the Internet.

Revoke publication

It is possible at all times to cancel the publication of your SimpleSYN-server on the creativbox.net servers. Thereunto click again onto “Publish server for Internet synchronization” and subsequently on “Revoke server publication”. All data stored on the creativbox.net server is deleted and the server-ID now invalid.

Save invitation file

If you do not wish to save any data onto the creativebox.net server it is possible to save an invitation file. Forward the invitations file for example on a USB-stick or via e-mail together with your server password to your SimpleSYN-clients

If the possibility to establish the SimpleSYN-clients in the same network as your SimpleSYN-server exists, it is unnecessary to either save an invitation file or to publish the SimpleSYN-server in the Internet. The SimpleSYN-client will locate the server automatically in the local network. After the setup with activated Internet synchronization it is possible to remove the SimpleSYN-clients from the local network and to synchronize via the Internet from the outside.

Client settings

To synchronize with a SimpleSYN-server via the Internet select the checkbox “Synchronize via the Internet”. If your SimpleSYN-server is currently available in the local network it is possible to select it in the drop-down menu. If your SimpleSYN-server is not available in the local network a connection has to be established via the Internet. A unique Server-ID or an invitation file is necessary for this.

Click onto “Connect to a server located at the Internet” if your SimpleSYN-server is not available in the local network.
